PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence police cruiser that was stolen, eventually leading to a chase in Connecticut early Saturday morning, was taken outside of Rhode Island Hospital, according to a police report obtained by ABC6 News. According to the report, officers took an uninvolved man to Rhode Island Hospital at his request, and then parked outside the public waiting area of the emergency room. During that time, police said 27-year-old Jared Remson was throwing chairs in the waiting area. Police removed him from the waiting area, according to the report. Once Remson left, police said he was seen on camera walking toward the area where two cruisers were parked. Video shows Remson then getting into one of the cruisers and driving away, police said. A police officer returning to that cruiser then noticed it was missing, about five minutes after Remson took it, according to the police report. Police then aired a description of the missing cruiser to surrounding departments over radio communications. A police officer’s cell phone was left inside the missing cruiser, so police used that to track its location. According to the report, the phone was located in Connecticut when officers pinged it. That’s when Connecticut State Police began pursuing the cruiser, eventually using spike strips to bring the chase to a close, according to the report. Once he is extradited to Rhode Island, Remson will face a charge for stealing the cruiser, police said. He was taken for a mental health evaluation in Connecticut following his arrest. Remson was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in New London, but the matter was continued, and he will instead be arraigned Tuesday, according to the court clerk’s office.
