BRAINTREE, Mass. (WPRI) — Thayer Academy basketball head coach Mike Babul passed away last month.
Mike Babul died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 47, leaving behind a legacy as a Massachusetts basketball legend.
The autopsy showed undetected and untreated critical heart disease, his identical twin brother Jon said.
Mike played at North Attleboro High School before taking his talents to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
He started 100 games over four years for the Minutemen, making the A-10 All-Defensive team in three seasons.
After graduation, he coached at Seekonk High School and the G-League Long Island Nets, before landing at Thayer Academy.
"He grinded. He lived out of his car. He would drive to driveways and work with a 7-year-old girl and then drive to another high school, and work with a high school team," Jon said. "He put miles on his car and his heart but chased his passion, but he was happy."
Mike's wake is Friday in Mansfield. Because of the large turnout expected, it has been moved to the Mansfield Fieldhouse from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The funeral is Saturday morning in North Attleboro.
A GoFundMe has also been set up to launch a foundation in his name, which will provide educational scholarships, youth basketball program tuition assistance, coaching education, and raise awareness for heart health.
