CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Going through these bone-chilling days of winter can be difficult for those without working heat, and that’s the reality for two Chesapeake women. Like many, Gloria Simms was worried about telling anyone of her predicament. "Sometimes with pride, you don't want to bother people,” Gloria Simms said. But the spirit moved her in church Sunday to talk about it. She's had no heat in her home for the past year. The thermostat reads 66, and that's with a heater in the hallway. It's an older home she inherited from her parents. "We had folks saying they could help us," Simms said. "And then, they would show up and then they say, 'Well, they couldn't really help us because they don't do this type of work.'" A while back, Simms had a reverse heat pump system installed, but no secondary heating element was installed to go with it. Her godson also paid for a new hot water heater a year ago and they believe whoever put that in, took out whatever was keeping hot air circulating through the house. Now, they spend their day huddled together in the living room around portable heaters. The 84-year-old Simms worries about her 99-year-old aunt she takes care of. "She wraps up real good," Simms said. "We both got blankets and try to keep ourselves safe. But I don't keep the heaters on during the nighttime, ‘cause something could happen to trigger a fire.'" Their pastor, Edwin Goodwin, is stepping up. He contacted 10 On Your Side to help get the word out for much-needed help to come forward for these two deserving women."We have a good time together," Simms said. "Sometimes, instead of like aunt and niece, we're like two sisters. We both believe in prayer, first of all, that once we lay down, God going to protect us."
