LAS VEGAS — The days of having a TV take up premium real estate on the living room wall are numbered. Projectors continue to claim market share when it comes to home entertainment, especially with the younger generations.
So the challenge for projector makers has been how to maximize performance (viewers demand quality picture and sound, after all) while staying on trend by offering the most compact, inconspicuous design possible. The solution? A short-throw projector.
All of the big projector makers have jumped into the space, with options from Optoma, BenQ and Hisense already on the market. But a hungry startup from China, Yaber, which launched its first projector in 2019, is eager to snap up more customers.
On Monday at CES, Yaber rolled out its latest model, the K300s, which weighs less than 4 pounds and requires just 9 inches of clearance to display a 100-inch screen. For reference, the standard throw for a projector is about 100 inches, while, for many short-throw models, it’s 40 to 60 inches.
It’s perfect for apartment dwellers or for rooms in the house where you might want to engage with entertainment but don’t want to dedicate space for a TV, like in a bedroom.
The tech on the machine is impressive: dual 15-watt speakers (from their partnership with JBL), a 1500:1 contrast ratio and 1.07 billion colors available for an ultrarich picture. It offers auto focus and keystone correction, which has become a must-have feature for projectors. It also has smart-TV functionality built in, so you can watch Netflix and YouTube and access other streaming services without additional hardware.
It’s an entry-level product, with the price announced at $999.99. Which is decent considering many of their higher-end competitors are priced well into the thousands of dollars.
The product will be available on the Yaber website on Jan. 15 and on retail sites shortly thereafter. BestReviews will be testing the model upon its launch to the market and will update our Best Short-Throw Projectors page following that testing.
