FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Court documents reveal an alleged motive for the fatal stabbing of a man at Promenade Park on Saturday. The Fort Wayne Police Department announced Monday officers arrested Lamont Cooley, 23, in connection to the stabbing. He faces a murder charge in the case and admitted to his role in the stabbing, according to Allen Superior Court documents filed Tuesday. Cooley told police the man who was stabbed, 48-year-old Anthony "Africa" Wamue, had been harassing a woman in the bathroom where he would later be found dead, according to court documents. Saturday night, FWPD officers responded to a report of an unconscious person in a bathroom at the park. Police at the scene found a man, later identified as Wamue, suffering from stab wounds in his torso. Wamue was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance footage outside the bathroom showed Cooley, a woman and another man enter and exit the bathroom several times, according to court documents. At one point, the woman is seen throwing a knife out the door, where Cooley allegedly picked it up. Although the stabbing wasn't caught on camera, Cooley is eventually seen leaving the bathroom with Wamue's bicycle. Cooley told police in court documents the woman first went into the bathroom alone with Wamue, but Cooley said she came out to get him and the other man because Wamue was allegedly harassing her. Cooley claimed Wamue pulled out a knife first, so he "stuck" Wamue in the chest to protect the woman, according to court documents. The court documents don't specify if the man appeared to be harassing the woman based on what the security footage showed. Police also noted in court documents Cooley admitted to stabbing Wamue with the knife that the woman had thrown out of the bathroom. When police found Cooley on Monday, he was wearing the same clothes shown on security footage from the park, complete with red stains on his hoodie and shoes. Police allegedly found a folding knife in his pocket that matched the one seen on camera just before the stabbing, according to court documents. Wamue’s death marks the first homicide ruling for 2025 in Allen County.
