FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The California High-Speed Rail is one step closer to becoming a reality. In Shafter on Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced three major updates to the project. Newsom announced they're now able to start construction on the railhead, that Construction Package 4 is now complete and that they're working with the High Desert Corridor and Brightline West in Las Vegas to connect those systems to California High-Speed Rail. "We are finally here, announcing this railhead project, moving forward to lay this track, and to get this project to a point where success becomes irresistible," he said.  These updates were exciting for Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.  "This is really our opportunity to be reconnected to that California economy through high-speed rail. If you can imagine people working in the Silicon Valley, but living in Downtown Fresno, and that is what high-speed rail means to us is reconnecting to the broader state of California," Dyer said.  And High-Speed Rail Authority Board Member and former Fresno County Supervisor Henry Perea agrees with Dyer. Perea said having the hub in Downtown Fresno will be huge for revitalization. He said Monday's updates were important, and now, they're working on the next steps.  "As a board, this year, we are going to be awarding the contracts for who will be actually building the track and systems, and we're going to be buying the trains," Perea said.  But, not everyone is on board. After years of delays and budget increases, District 8 Assemblymember David Tangipa, isn't so sure Monday's press conference was any progress. He said the project's $100 billion price tag, has little to show for it.  "There's a lot of, again, ribbon cuttings, groundbreaking announcements, celebrations. I'm waiting for something that is tangible," he said.  Tangipa adds he understands the appeal of job creation opportunities the project provides, but is ultimately not satisfied with how the project has approached funding.  "I love projects and I believe that infrastructure projects are part of our future, but not when it's something that doesn't have a true financial plan," he said.  The press release from the governor's office stated they hope to have passenger service available around 2030 to 2033.
