ALAMEDA, Calif. (KRON) – The usually quiet City of Alameda is now dealing with a series of break-ins and robberies. In the Marina Village Shopping Center, 360 Gourmet Burritos was vandalized and burglarized last week. Additionally, in this same plaza, a Lucky grocery store was looted. “This problem affects everywhere. More in different cities – I’m surprised this happened in Alameda,” said Javier Benites, the owner of the burrito shop.  Last week, burglars smashed the window of his store and took a register that had $1,000 cash inside. San Francisco social worker shot in face “Twenty-to-fifty percent is cash, the rest is credit cards. We don’t have too much money here,” he said. Additionally, store payment processing iPads were stolen and security cameras were destroyed. Benites now has to use an older system to ring up customers. He says this was his first time getting targeted in 35 years of being in business. “Right now we are seeing more and more, especially this shopping center,” he said.  Multiple other stores in Alameda have been hit. Lucky supermarket in the same plaza was looted, and the popular beauty store Ulta was broken into. The front door of Stiiizy, a cannabis store in Alameda, was vandalized as well, but nothing was stolen. “We are going to hold those who have committed crimes in our city accountable, and I’m looking forward to some follow-up on this story,” said Alameda police chief Nishant Joshi. Police suspect the crimes are linked. He is confident there will be a “resolution.”  Alameda police say they are looking at transit patterns in particular to solve these specific crimes and using license plate reader technology that is at every exit and entry point in the city. The police chief said businesses are being proactive in helping to solve these cases by sharing their security camera footage.
