WASHINGTON, (WWLP) - The body of former President Jimmy Carter will be moved from the Carter Center in Georgia to the U.S. Capitol ahead of the late president's funeral on Thursday.
Can Washington handle two weeks of high-security pomp along with a heavy burst of snow?
Public visitation ended at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Then, at 11:00 a.m., the departure ceremony will begin and a motorcade will escort Carter's body to the Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia. His family will join on a flight headed for D.C., where members of Congress and the public can pay their respects as he lies in state.
The national funeral service happens Thursday in D.C., and then the former president's body will be flown back home to Georgia for a private service and burial.
USA Today states that President Joe Biden declared January 9 as a national day of mourning after his death on December 29, which will close all executive departments and agencies of the federal government on the same day. All U.S. flags were also ordered to fly at half-staff for 30 days.
