City crews work around the clock to clear and treat roads

City Streets & Roads continue working around the clock, clearing roadways and treating roads with rock salt, salt brine, and Beet Heet. All city crews involved in snow removal duties are working 24 hours a day in alternating 12-hour shifts. Staff from Streets & Roads have also cleared roadways of fallen trees and branches.
Mayor Linda Gorton declared a snow emergency for Lexington. The city’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated, and all public safety divisions are on 24-hour schedules through Thursday, Jan. 9.
City offices for employees not involved in weather response will be closed today, Tuesday, Jan. 7. In addition, the following will be closed today:
City Employee Pharmacy
Dr. Samuel Brown Health Center
Fayette County Clerk’s Office
Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, Hilsle Park, McConnell Springs Park (all programs canceled)
Dunbar, Castlewood, Kenwick, Tates Creek, and William Wells Brown community centers
All Play Golf Lexington courses (Lakeside, Tates Creek, Gay Brewer Jr. Course at Picadome and Kearney Hill Golf Links)
In addition, there will be no garbage, recycling, or yard waste collection today, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Registration for the spring 2025 Therapeutic Recreation programs has been postponed to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
The Urban County Council swearing-in ceremony has been postponed to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Lexington Senior Center.
Between midnight and 6 a.m. today, the Lexington Police Department responded to 1 non-injury collision, 0 injury collisions, 1 traffic hazard, 1 escort and 3 calls for motorist assistance. Drivers should allow themselves plenty of the time to reach their destination. Motorists are reminded to drive slowly, increase following distance, and be on the lookout for black ice.
The Lexington Fire Department urges residents to use caution with home heating equipment. Space heaters should be at least 3 feet away from combustibles. Generators and grills should never be used inside a home.
The Office of Homelessness Prevention & Intervention Emergency Weather Plan remains in effect. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call LexCall at 311 to be connected with the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention. After business hours, contact the Street Outreach team at (859) 551-8053 or (859) 556-1870. In case of an emergency, call 911.

Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Traffic Management X account @lexwrecks. They can also view traffic at major intersections in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
