The PGA Tour’s “Aloha Swing” continues this week with the Sony Open in Hawaii, the first full-field event of the 2025 season. A total of 144 players will take on Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. This marks the first tournament where players can earn points toward the Aon Swing 5, which determines qualification for prestigious events like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational. Hideki Matsuyama, fresh off a stellar performance at The Sentry where he posted a 35-under 257 at Kapalua, will look to carry that momentum to Waialae. Matsuyama, the 2022 Sony Open champion, is among six past winners in the field. Nearly half of the participants from The Sentry, including Thomas Detry (making his Sony debut) and Corey Conners (four top-15 finishes at Waialae in six starts), will also compete in the second Hawaiian stop of the year. Seabury Hall senior and UCLA signee Tyler Loree, the reigning HHSAA state champion, earned a sponsor’s exemption after winning a local qualifier last month. Loree shot six birdies to secure the spot by four strokes. Kaimuki graduate Chan Kim, the only PGA Tour member from Hawaii in the field, will also compete. The Sony Open runs from Thursday to Sunday with an $8.7 million purse, including $1.5 million for the winner. The reigning champion, Grayson Murray, tragically passed away in May 2024, just four months after his victory. His family confirmed he died by suicide at the age of 30.
