LUMBERTON, N.C. (WBTW) — A Lumberton man is facing death by distribution charges in connection with a 2023 incident, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office said Monday night. Maurice Tyquan Whitted, 35, was arrested and booked without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center on one count of second-degree murder by distribution of drugs. Investigators said 34-year-old Britany M. McNeil was found unresponsive in her Littlefield Acres Loop Road home on Oct. 11, 2023, She later died at UNC Southeastern Medical Center. “Death by distribution cases are typically difficult to prove and to bring forth for prosecution. This makes it essential for law enforcement officers to conduct thorough investigations and follow all leads," Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in a statement. "Unfortunately, as seen in this case, there are backlogs in receiving toxicology reports. However, when we receive them, and the results along with other evidence are such that we can bring forth criminal charges, we do so as quickly as possible. Families need closure and they deserve it. Other investigations are ongoing and hopefully, we can bring those families a similar result," Wilkins said.
