NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) - First responders rescued a child from a smoke-filled apartment over the weekend, after the person who lived in that residence died in a fiery vehicle crash. Neenah police officers said a man crashed his vehicle into a tree at the intersection of Park and Bayview in Neenah on Saturday night. Officers said that the car caught on fire. They eventually were able to pull the man, who was unconscious by this time, out of the vehicle. The man later died in the hospital. Neighbors who live near the crash site said they saw a car traveling at a high rate of speed before it crashed into the tree. "I saw a speeding car hit right into that tree across from my house," said Christopher Green who lives across the street from the crash site. "Never seen anything like it before, hope I never do again." Wisconsin authorities remind motorists of highway crossovers following complete shutdown of U.S. Highway 14 Green said he watched the crash unfold from his kitchen window, and couldn't believe what he was seeing. He said he ran outside towards the crash site to see if there was anything he could do to help. "The car was completely demolished, crushed, he was inside of it," Green told Local 5 News. "It was horrific, it was the most horrible thing that I have ever seen. I wasn't prepared for what I saw." "It was so loud that it shook my house," said Nick Miller another person who lives near the crash site. "I went out by the walking trail and I could see that there was a huge fire, the flames were really high." Neighbors said there was a large number of emergency vehicles that responded to the scene. Neenah police officers said they initially received information that a 1-year-old child might be in the vehicle with the victim. They said they searched the car and couldn't find the child. They said that smoke filled the apartment because food had been left in the oven. Police said they rescued the child who didn't require medical attention. The child is with family members. There's a growing memorial at the base of the tree where the crash occurred. Family members and friends of the victims left flowers, a cross, and pictures of the victim. Police have not identified the crash victim yet. Local 5 News spoke with a person on the phone who knew him. He said the crash victim had the biggest heart, cared for everyone, and loved his family. The person who Local 5 News spoke with said that he's best friends with the victim and that they spent a lot of time roller skating together. We're told that friends and family held a vigil to remember the victim over the weekend. "You just feel terrible for his friends and family and like I said it was an awful situation," said Green. The man was 22 years old at the time of the crash. Neenah police officers wouldn't do an on-camera interview with Local 5 News citing the ongoing investigation. People who live near the crash site said they'd like to see drivers slow down when they drive through their neighborhood.
