ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A full-court buzzer-beater provided a memorable moment for Bishop Kearney, but it was Aquinas having the last laugh as the Li'l Irish took down their rivals 85-75 in overtime. Trailing by three points with less than a second remaining in regulation, Bishop Kearney's Alejandro Aguilar heaved up a prayer from his own-free throw line. As the buzzer rang out, the shot splashed in the center of the hoop. That momentum did not carry over to overtime, however, as Aquinas opened the extra frame on a 13-1 run to pull away for the win. Christian "Noonie" McCullough had seven of his game-high 30 points in overtime. Aquinas led 34-30 at halftime, but Bishop Kearney dominated the third quarter to take a 50-43 lead into the fourth. With 5:30 to play, Noah Terry hit a three-pointer to make it 55-47 Bishop Kearney. Thanks to back-to-back buckets by Jayden Capers, BK kept an eight-point lead, up 62-54 with three minutes left in the game. The Li'l Irish did not give up hope, as their press forced multiple turnovers to allow them to get back into the game. They were down just three points with 30 seconds left when McCullough converted a three-point play to tie the game at 67. The next seven points were all scored at the free-throw line. Trailing 69-68 with five seconds to play, AQ's Mackie Terry was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He made all three free throws to put his team up 71-69. Bishop Kearney called a timeout with 2.5 seconds left, but on the ensuing inbound, they turned the ball over. They were forced to foul Carson Allen, who went to the free-throw line with 0.9 seconds left. Allen missed the first free throw, then made the second. Bishop Kearney inbounded the ball to Aguilar who heaved it nearly to the ceiling and into the bottom of the net. FULL-COURT BUZZER BEATER: With Bishop Kearney down by 3 to Aquinas with 0.9 seconds left, Alejandro Aguilar heaved a prayer from his own free-throw line and it was nothing but net!The celebration would be short-lived, however, as AQ won 85-75 in OT. @News_8 @BKHS_Sports pic.twitter.com/ZigBvGyW40— AJ Feldman (@AJFeldmanTV) January 7, 2025 While the shot was spectacular, it probably should not have counted. The clock was very late to start— Aguilar took a dribble before any time ticked off the scoreboard and the play took at least one second to complete. However, Aquinas did not let the buzzer-beater rattle them. In the fourth quarter, the Li'l Irish missed a handful of makeable shots. In overtime, they all fell. The Irish went on a 13-1 run, making five field goals before Bishop Kearney scored a bucket. McCullough led all scorers with 30 points, with Terry netting 22 for Aquinas and Jah Breedlove scoring 18. Aguilar led the Kings with 27 points while Capers had 24 points. Aquinas (6-1) is undefeated in Section V play this season and will visit Monroe on Thursday, January 9th. Bishop Kearney (1-7) will try to bounce back when they host UPrep on the same evening.
