FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Mono Winds could bring highway speed gusts to the Sierra Nevada starting Monday night, the National Weather Service says. According to the latest models, a trough sliding down the backside of the Sierra Nevada is expected to bring 20 to 30 mph northeast winds and gusts up to 60 mph in some areas. Mountainous areas could experience gusts up to 55 mph, while low-lying areas around the 99 likely will not see speeds top 20 mph. The Madera County Sheriff's Office says the primary concerns for regions will be the potential for downed trees and power outages. Deputies advise drivers who come across trees or downed lines the blocking roadway to turn around, use an alternate route instead of driving around, and after safely parking, report the issue using the non-emergency line or 311. Due to the projected high wind event, the NWS has issued a wind advisory for the Western Sierra Nevada; a map of the areas under the advisory can be seen below. The sheriff's office says there is projected to be a marginal chance of winds reaching 25 mph during the event for Oakhurst, Bass Lake and North Fork. The peak of the winds will occur between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, according to the sheriff's office. The peak winds will occur between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Wednesday.
