Fresno Chaffee Zoo helped rescue dozens of exotic animals in 2024

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Fresno Chaffee Zoo has assisted in the rescue of dozens of exotic animals in the past year, zoo officials said.
According to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, staff assisted in the confiscation of more than 40 exotic animals in 2024. The zoo says the number is only a fraction of the thousands of exotic animals rescued from the illegal pet trade in California.
Exotic animals are defined as first-generation animals that are not native to the state, including gerbils, hedgehogs, ferrets, and snails. A full list of illegal pets can be found here.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says many of these animals are prohibited because they pose a threat to California native fish and wildlife, agriculture, and public health. The Chaffee Zoo adds that many of these animals require a specialized diet and medical care, can carry diseases, and have instincts that can lead to serious injury.

However, potential exotic animal owners who have a compelling reason for caring for an exotic pet - such as for research, public exhibition, or education - can apply for a Restricted Species Permit.
