SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Monday was the last day in office for San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas and a handful of elected officials are competing for her seat. After Vargas announced her plans to step down from her post on Dec. 20, San Diego City Councilmember Vivian Moreno was the first to officially announce she would be running to fill Vargas' vacancy. PREVIOUS: With Board Chair Nora Vargas ending her term, here’s who’s vying to replace her "This position needs a stable figure, a person that is willing to go up to bat for District 1 and a person that has the know-how of how to manage a bureaucracy as large as the county. That person is me," said Moreno during a sit-down interview with KUSI on Friday, Jan. 3. Watch the full interview below. The other candidates for District 1 County Supervisor currently hold public office throughout the South Bay. Chula Vista Mayor John McCann said he was considering running for the position last month. He sat down with KUSI Monday morning to officially declare his candidacy. "I'm going to respectfully represent Democrats, Republicans, independents altogether. I am definitely someone who is common-sense, and very pro-law enforcement and I'm anti-tax," he stated. On Dec. 30, Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre publicly announced her intent to run for the seat vacated by Vargas. “South County has been ignored for too long — and I’m ready to change that,” Aguirre stated on her campaign website. Aguirre sat down with KUSI to speak about her candidacy on Sunday, Jan. 5. Last Thursday, Chula Vista Councilmember Carolina Chavez joined the list of names eyeing a seat on the board, as reported by Axios San Diego. On the date of when Vargas announced her decision, Chavez made the following statement on her Instagram and Facebook pages: “I want to thank @supnoravargas for her service to our region and her unwavering commitment to our community. Her dedication to uplifting our region and her tireless advocacy for equity and justice has left an indelible mark on San Diego County.” Vargas, who was the first person of color and Latina to hold elected office on the board, stated in her announcement about her decision to step down that her priority “has always been our community, ensuring that everyone can be seen, heard and have a chance to thrive.” She said she decided to leave her position based on "personal safety and security reasons," but did not explain further. “As a Guerrera at my core, I remain committed to continuing the fight for equity, justice, and human rights – just in a different capacity,” Vargas said in her announcement about leaving her post. “I look forward to staying whole-heartedly engaged and active in the pursuit of a more equitable society.” Vargas won re-election to the District 1 seat on the board back in November, defeating Republican candidate Alejandro (Alex) Galicia. The board is expected to hold a meeting on Jan. 14 to discuss whether to fill the vacancy by appointment or by calling a special election. The selected supervisor would serve the remainder of Vargas' term ending Jan. 8, 2029.
