(KRON) -- The Fremont Police Department arrested 18 people during a two-day sting operation in December, FPD announced Monday. Nine of the arrests were credited to the newly passed Prop 36.
The operation was conducted on Dec. 19 and 20 at two businesses in Fremont. It aimed to catch "prolific theft offenders."

Prop 36 allows for a felony arrest if the suspect has at least two previous theft-related convictions. The controversial law was passed in November, seeking to crack down on drug use and theft.
"In our ongoing effort to make our community even safer, the Fremont Police Department will continue to enforce the new drug and theft laws enacted," FPD said.
Separately, a 43-year-old Fremont man was arrested at the Fremont Hub on Dec. 18 and later charged under Prop 36. Police said the man caused a disturbance and stole a bottle of alcohol.
