SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A San Francisco social worker who helps residents at a supportive housing complex in the SoMa neighborhood was shot in the face by one woman who lives there, investigators said. Dan-iel Drakes was one of two victims who were shot at Tahanan, located at 833 Bryant Street, on January 2, family members told KRON4. The Tahanan housing complex is managed by a nonprofit, Mercy Housing, and is home to residents who were formerly homeless. Drakes, 37, is employed by Episcopal Community Services and she was reportedly working when she was shot. The shooter was identified by prosecutors as Monique Davis, 49. She is a convicted felon who was out of custody on bail at the time of the Tahanan shooting. Episcopal Community Services' director told KRON4 in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the ECS and Mercy staff who were grievously injured by this senseless act of violence. ECS will do everything in our power to support the victims, their families, our staff, and our residents as we navigate these challenging circumstances. ECS’ top priority is the safety and well-being of all residents and staff at the Tahanan. We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement to support the investigation and extend our deepest gratitude to SFPD for their prompt response. At this time, we ask for respect and privacy for all those involved during this difficult period." On the morning of January 2, Davis entered an elevator in the supportive housing complex and began punching someone inside the elevator, according to the District Attorney's Office. Davis then retrieved a pistol from her room, went down to the lobby area, and fired several shots, prosecutors said. One of the bullets pierced through Drakes' face, and another victim was shot in the arm. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins described the violence as "tragic and senseless." San Francisco Police Department officers quickly arrested Davis when they found her on the corner of Hyde and Eddy streets. Davis made her first court appearance in the Hall of Justice on Monday. She is charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm, and committing a crime while out on bail. The Tahanan is located directly across the street from the Hall of Justice. Its website states that it is a "brand new development of permanent supportive housing for adults who have experienced homelessness." It contains 145 apartments.
