SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The City of Springfield is recruiting the next generation of law enforcement. Are you interested in a career in law enforcement? Then the Springfield Police Department wants to meet you. The department is opening its doors to give potential recruits an idea of what it takes to serve and protect the city alongside the nearly 500 officers that make up the Springfield PD. "We want people who have sound judgment skills and are able to make good decisions--sound decisions that will benefit the public and Springfield Police Department," says SPD Instructor and Officer Robert Carter. City officials hosted the first of two open house sessions at the Springfield Police Training Facility—where community members met officers and learned about the application process to take the police officer exam. "It's important for people to build that connection with officers. If you can build that connection you are more likely to go through the process," says Caitlyn Julius with the Human Resources Dept. for the City of Springfield. "It can be a confusing process and a lot of people don't understand civil service or how to become a police officer. So this encourages them to take that step." People have until January 28th to apply for the civil service exam. The examination fee is $75 but that fee can be waived for eligible individuals. You must be 19 or older to take the exam, however, you cannot be appointed as an officer until you are 21 years old. You must also have a high school diploma or GED and the next open house will be held on January 27th.
