A 14-year-old boy riding a dirt bike died at the hospital after being involved in a head-on collision at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Oak Ridge Drive on Saturday night, according to Deputy Robert Jensen, spokesman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Jensen said the preliminary investigation revealed the victim was riding a dirt bike motorcycle, which was not street legal, northbound in the southbound lanes on Railroad Avenue when he collided head-to-head with an oncoming van.
The boy was knocked off the dirt bike and then struck by another vehicle and trapped under it. Deputies were the first to reach the scene of the 9:49 p.m. collision and rescued the victim from under the vehicle prior to L.A. County Fire Department arrival and treatment, Jensen added.
He said the Fire Department treated the boy at the scene and transported him to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. However, the boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m. on Sunday.
Jensen said that sheriff’s station officials have been made aware of a video circulating on social media depicting three juveniles riding dirt bikes in the food court of the Valencia Town Center mall, but could not confirm that the boy was one of the riders in the video and could not identify the other two juveniles on the bikes.
In a phone interview with The Signal, a woman who has identified herself as the aunt of the victim said that she had also been made aware of the video the morning following the collision and could identify her nephew as the driver of the first dirt bike.
She said that the boy had previously been in her care for almost six years, until he was placed with a foster family five months ago.
A woman who identified herself as the boy’s grandmother said on Sunday during a phone interview that she was heartbroken and at a loss for words about the death of her grandson.
“He had freedom riding his dirt bike. It’s something that he enjoyed doing,” she said.
A cousin of the motorcyclist described him as “one of the funniest people you would ever meet.” She said he loved to play soccer and video games.
The aunt said that he had a shy character when he was around people he didn’t know but then he would become the biggest jokester you met.
“He was always being silly and goofy,” she said.
The cousin added that the 14-year-old had recently begun dirt biking again and wanted to focus on the engineering aspect of it.
The grandmother said that he was an older brother and leaves behind three younger siblings, a 6-year-old and twins who were born on Dec. 15.
She said he will be very much missed, and he was deeply loved.
Jensen said that no arrest has been made, and the traffic collision was not being investigated as a criminal inquiry. He said the two vehicles involved with the collision were found to be not at fault.
The Signal is withholding the names of the motorcyclist and relatives pending official confirmation from the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s office.
