The Spurs go on the road after splitting the series with the Nuggets Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
The Spurs are on an ahead-of-schedule journey into contention, most recently splitting a pair of close games with the Denver Nuggets, one of this year’s title contenders. The Spur ran out of gas in overtime against Nikola Jokic, as Denver dominated the extra period.
The Spurs continue their brutal January schedule as they travel to the Windy City tonight to face the Bulls, who defeated the Spurs 139-124 on December 5. That was the second most points the Spurs have given up this season, as the Kings scored 140 the following night in a blowout loss for the Silver and Black. The Bulls are coming off a 139-126 win over the New York Knicks where both Zach Lavine and Coby scored 33 points. The Spurs are going to have to contain the Bulls dynamic guard duo and also try to limit Nikola Vučević, who scored 39 in the previous game in San Antonio. Chris Paul has been in a shooting slump recently, and although he’s been a key part in organizing the team, the Spurs will need his offense to get this win on the road. Jeremy Sochan should be in the lineup tonight, and hopefully he’ll can find more confidence in his offense tonight. As always, the Spurs revolve around Victor Wembanyama on both ends of the court, so it will be tricky for Coach Mitch Johnson to manage his minutes so that he’s effective at the end of the game while not allowing the Bulls to dominate the minutes he’s off the court.
It doesn’t get easier after tonight, as the Spurs travel to Milwaukee to face the Bucks and then to Los Angeles for a two-game series against the Lakers. Tonight’s game is one the Spurs really need to take advantage of to stay in the middle of the standings if they want to make it to the postseason. Let’s go Spurs!
