JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Johnston Police Department said one man was arrested after assaulting two police officers during an incident.
42-year-old Patrick Brearley, of Providence, was charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Around 11:50 p.m. on Jan. 4, Johnston police responded to The Ave Bar and Grille on Hartford Avenue after the business said a male was “disruptive to other customers.”
At the scene, police said Brearley was “extremely intoxicated and disoriented,” and that he refused to comply and leave the restaurant for transportation to the hospital for detoxification.
Officers then attempted to take the defendant outside, where he then allegedly clenched his fist, causing police to “take him to the ground,” according to officials.
Police said Brearley then supposedly struck one officer in the face with his closed fist, and while police attempted to place him into hand restraints, he allegedly struck a second officer in the face.
Johnston police were then able to control the situation and placed Brearley into custody.
After being discharged from the hospital, he was charged for the incident.
Brearley is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 10 in 3rd District Court.
The officers that were struck “did not sustain significant injury,” according to police.
