PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association said over 100 people were arrested for driving under the influence in Rhode Island during the New Year’s holiday period.
From Dec. 27 to Jan. 5, a total of 108 DUI arrests were made across the state with the combined efforts of 38 law enforcement agencies and the Rhode Island State police.
The RISP alone made 34 DUI arrests, and said it investigated 126 motor crashes and issued 843 citations for traffic violations.
“I’m proud of the work that our police officers are doing to keep our roadways safe, but at the same time, these numbers are deeply concerning,” RIPCA President Colonel Bradford Connor said. “Driving under the influence is never acceptable, and our message is clear: if you choose to drink or use cannabis and drive, you will be caught, and you will be arrested.”
During the holiday period, RIPCA had additional patrols on the roads to catch impaired drivers and posted the B.A.T. mobile in Cranston to help arraign DUI suspects.
RIPCA reminds residents to drive sober, designate a sober driver, use rideshare, or make a plan to stay where you are.
