RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) -- In response to a rash of recent gunshot reports, the Rapid City Police Department is trying something. They're focusing extra patrols throughout the city and it's having an impact.  18-year-old arrested in east Sioux Falls shooting If you've been out driving at night time recently in Rapid City, there's a good chance you've noticed more police cars.  "Visibility is a key portion of that and obviously having more officers out and about in patrol cars. Folks seeing those patrol cars in those neighborhoods, hopefully giving them a better sense of safety. That is part of it, being visible out there in the community  and making sure that we are out there in those neighborhoods that need it right now," RCPD Patrol Captain Andy Becker said. The police department is focusing the saturation patrols in areas where they get the most calls.  It's been less than a week and already these saturation patrols have yielded great success. Seeing over 100 extra traffic stops overnight, 25 individuals have been arrested, and they've even removed two firearms off the street. "From doing this, a lot of this crime is occurring from young adults or you know juveniles. So we want to make sure that gun safety is number one and that if you are a gun owner, that we want you to be responsible and make sure you know where it's at. Because they are getting into the wrong hands as we're seeing and then we have these types of situations," Becker said. While the saturation patrols are off to a strong start, police will continue to adjust their efforts to better serve and protect the community. One of those guns that was recovered was stolen from an unlocked car on Saturday morning. On Sunday, police pulled over a juvenile and found that same gun in the backseat. Police say it's a good reminder not to leave your gun in the car.
