PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — From Williamsburg to Chincoteague to the nation's capital, winter blew in with a vengeance, and with winter weather continuing overnight into Tuesday, it can lead to problems. "It could freeze overnight, so were looking at some of the winter precipitation, that winter mix, that could freeze on the lines and cause issues," said Dominion Energy spokesperson Cherise Newsome. Dominion Energy is preparing for a busy week, with freezing power lines the biggest threat. "Dominion Energy prepares for storms all year-round, and one way we do that is placing underground, outage-prone power lines so that they are less likely to experience an outage," Newsome said, "and so our crews can spend time helping areas that are hardest hit, and it reduces the restoration time for everyone." If you notice sagging lines, or downed trees across wires, report it by calling 1-866-DOM-HELP. "Assume that all downed lines are energized," Newsome said. "Just because there is ice or snow doesn't mean that the line isn't hot, which means that electricity could still be flowing through it. Definitely stay away and call us." While there are local crews still keeping an eye on our neighborhoods, Dominion crews are working across the state. "Our northern Virginia regions, western Virginia and our central Virginia regions experienced the brunt of winter storm Blair with the snow and with the winter mix and freezing rain," Newsome said. "So we were able to support those areas with crews from across our region, including in Hampton Roads." Though Hampton Roads didn't see the brunt of this storm, it's a good time to prepare for the next one. "Make sure that your emergency kit is ready," Newsome said. "Make sure that you have downloaded our app [and] make sure you can receive emergency notifications in case there is severe weather that does approach your neighborhood or community."
