VSP urges drivers to use caution as winter weather moves across the state

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police has investigated more than 300 crashes on roads throughout Virginia from Sunday night into Monday afternoon as a winter storm moved across the region.
According to Sgt. Michella Anaya, dozens of car crashes happened across Hampton Roads in that time frame. She said nine people were injured and one person died in the accidents that happened during that time.
“Due to inclement weather, we do find that people tend to speed, tailgate and lose control of their vehicles,” Anaya said.
While not all these crashes may be storm related, VSP hopes it will provide a picture of what troopers are seeing on the roads.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Department of Transportation is also making sure the roads are safe.
"VDOT crews will continue to work around the clock to treat the roads and address any slick or icy spots as needed, using salt or a salt-abrasive mix to enhance traction and melt ice and snow, in preparation for [Tuesday] morning’s commute,” a VDOT spokesperson said.
Anaya also urged residents not to drive if they don’t have to. But if they do, they should plan their route ahead of time, look out for road conditions, avoid distractions, use headlights and to not speed.
"Although the speed limit [might say 55], drive for the current weather conditions. Slower speeds allow you more time to safely react and to avoid a traffic crash,” Anaya said.
In an update Monday evening, state police said that, between 4 and 9:30 p.m. there were 52 crashes statewide, with 14 of those in the Hampton Roads region. There were injuries in one of those 14 crashes.
Anaya added that this is important to remember when encountering black ice, which is something that can happen as this weather continues.
"Do not slam on brakes," Anaya said. "Let go of the gas pedal and try to navigate and straighten out your vehicle."
