MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A freshman at the University of Mississippi was among those injured in the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day. Parker Vidrine, 18, was with a group of friends on Bourbon Street when he was hit by a truck driven by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a family friend said. Fourteen people were killed, and about 35 were hurt in the attack. Jabbar, a U.S. citizen who had proclaimed his support for the Islamic State militant group, was fatally shot in a firefight with police. Blakeney McGee said Vidrine was in the hospital for several days and at one point on a ventilator but is now back home. Vidrine's mother shared a picture on Facebook of her son surrounded by friends and said the warmth of his friends had been more healing than she could put into words. The FBI says the man responsible for New Year’s truck attack visited New Orleans twice before McGee said the Baton Rouge teen faces a long road to recovery and has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover his medical expenses. One of Vidrine's friends, University of Alabama Freshman Kareem Badawi, was also hit but did not survive his injuries. Louisiana Mayor Jeff Landry has called for a day of morning for each of the 14 victims, and Monday recognized Badawi. Kareem Badawi. Courtesy: Gov. Jeff Landry University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce released a statement about Vidrine following the terror attack. Boyce said he had spoken directly with the student’s mother to extend the university’s full support. "I was deeply saddened to learn that one of our own students was critically injured in the violent attack in downtown New Orleans and is receiving medical care," said Boyce. "We join the New Orleans community in grief." To donate to the GoFundMe for Vidrine, click right here.
