Massive fire at warehouse on east side of Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — No one was hurt late Monday night in a large building fire easily visible to I-70 drivers on the city’s east side.
The building fire was reported about 10:35 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of Adams Street. That’s in an industrial area just southeast of the I-70 interchange for Keystone and Rural avenues. Initial reports had called the building a warehouse.
Indianapolis Fire Department says the fire in the building, which was described as a body shop, was a result of the improper use of a propane gas heater.
Rita Reith, a fire department spokesperson, says three people in the body shop tried to light the heater with the wrong fuel inside, leading to the fire. They got out of the building before fire personnel arrived.
An Indiana Department of Transportation camera captured flames and smoke going high into the air for more than an hour.
Information shared from police at the scene during the fire had indicated the warehouse was part of a kitchen and bath countertop maker.
