FITCHBURG, Wis. (WFRV) - Authorities in southern Wisconsin are reminding motorists that highway crossovers are designated for emergency and highway maintenance vehicles only.
On Friday, Jan. 3, shortly before 9:00 a.m., an oversized load attempted to turn around using a crossover on U.S. Highway 14 after the truck driver realized the vehicle would not clear the railroad bridge on the northern border.

The situation was eventually turned over to the Wisconsin State Patrol. Fitchburg Police expressed appreciation for the patience of motorists impacted by the road closure.
Authorities also commended the truck driver for recognizing the clearance limitation and taking steps to avoid a potentially dangerous situation, despite the permit routing the load in that direction.
