SPARTA, Wis. (WFRV) - Online threats directed at a Wisconsin middle school have resulted in charges being referred against a 14-year-old student, according to the Sparta Police Department. On Sunday, Jan. 5, officers and the Sparta Area School District were alerted to online threats made against students at Meadowview Middle School. Law enforcement and school officials immediately began notifications and an investigation into the threats. One of the threatening posts featured a firearm, which was later determined to be a toy. The investigation identified the suspect as a 14-year-old who created a "burner" or fake account under the name of a 13-year-old Meadowview student. Authorities clarified that the 13-year-old whose name was used is a victim of targeted harassment and had no involvement in the threatening posts. The incident was determined to be an act of harassment rather than a school-wide threat. The Sparta Police Department has referred the following charges against the 14-year-old: Identity Theft – Harm Reputation Swatting – False Reporting of an Emergency Terrorist Threats "Our investigation is complete and will be relayed to the proper agencies," stated the Sparta Police Department. Due to the suspect's age, further actions and consequences will be determined in accordance with Sparta Area School District policy. Federal agencies now involved in search for Wisconsin man accused of triple homicide Both the police department and school district emphasized the seriousness of such incidents. "Student safety is our top priority, and we work hard to protect all students and staff," officials stated. While authorities believe the schools are safe, an increased police presence will be maintained throughout the week as a precaution.
