FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A local dance program is celebrating hip-hop dance and culture. Neustalgic Grooves hosted their opening night "Intro to Street Dance" program Monday Night at East Ende Eclectic on Berry Street. The program teaches street styles, which includes popping, locking and breaking, or what many know as break dancing. The creators of the program say street dance has had its feet in Fort Wayne for decades, with many of the dance instructors being from the area themselves. "For us, we just wanted to implement what our background is and share our stories and our experiences," said program creator, Jocelyn Eckhout. "Because that's really what matters. It's the only way we're going to grab a younger generation." One of the dance instructors, Sockie Phommachanh first learned street dance through a program at Fellowship Missionary Church back in 2009. He says that dancing kept him and his friends out of trouble and offered him a sense of community. Now Phommachanh is helping provide that space for others. Neustalgic Grooves will be hosting events on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can check out their Facebook page for more information here.
