BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Multiple gymnasts at LSU returned from its championship season a year ago, and that experience clearly showed on opening night as the Tigers dominated Iowa State, winning 197.300-194.100. The Tigers posted their second-best score on opening night in program history. And they did it without one of the best all-around gymnasts in the country, Haleigh Bryant, who is still nursing an elbow injury she sustained in December in their exhibition meet. The true freshman Kailin Chio filled in for the Olympian, and she stole the show, catching the attention of Tiger fans with top performances in bars, beam, and floor, ranking in the top ten in the nation in all three events. Chio recorded the school’s highest all-around debut score by a freshman with her 39.575 on opening night. She tied with all-around senior Aleah Finnegan on bars and balance beam with impressive 9.900 and 9.925 scores.  "I just think she showed up physically in a really good spot," said head coach Jay Clark. "Her body felt good. She was ready to go. All of her skills were there. She had not suffered any kind of setback." "Kailin is incredible," said gymnast Olivia Dunne. "I think that she came in with such a great mindset, and she competes like a vet. And I really admire the way that she trained all preseason. It was just so admirable, even from a fifth-year senior's perspective." Clark also gave a promising injury update on Bryant, saying she is making significant progress with her elbow injury, and we could possibly see her on the balance beam on Saturday in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad in a four-team meet against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 4 Utah, and No. 6 California.
