BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry announced through social media it is closing its doors after 15 years of serving the community. "It's going to be a hard hit for everybody," said Tina Franco, who has been getting food from the pantry for five years. Feeding her two pitbulls is not cheap. "For my two dogs that would be very expensive because they, they're probably about 80-pound dogs," said Franco, "To feed them a month it probably would be like $60 to $70 dollars." A price not every pet owner can pay in Kern County as a turbulent economy weighs heavily on many people's wallets. "New recipients to us that we didn't have before, also our donations have just dropped like crazy," said Robin Ackling, President of the Board of Members at the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry. "Monetary donations have just gone down, down, down." Leticia Perez appointed chairwoman of Kern County Board of Supervisors The Pantry needs more than $30,000 to secure its two year lease...forcing them to close by the end of February unless a miracle happens. "If someone has a commercial space that would meet our needs and is less than $1,200 a month, we are definitely open to moving," said Ackling. From distributions twice a month from their warehouse, once a month delivery to the Plaza Towers, and a partnership with Meals on Wheels, the Pantry helps many families, some even struggling to feed themselves and their pets.
