BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Three people pleaded no contest Monday to assaulting a pregnant woman in Boron, according to court records. The defendants included the victim's mother-in-law.
Esther Ramirez, Linette Alcantarra and Guillermo Corona-Huizar each pleaded no contest to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, records show. Charges of attempted murder and false imprisonment with violence were dismissed.
All three were sentenced to time served and a year of probation, records show.
In April, deputies were called to a report of an assault and found two women fighting on the ground near a vehicle, according to court documents. They separated them and questioned witnesses and others involved.
The pregnant woman had bruising and bleeding to her lips and nose, and her eyes had begun to swell, deputies said in the filings.
She was taken by ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital, where she provided an account of what happened.
That morning, her live-in boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of spousal battery. It’s not the first time that’s happened during their relationship, the woman said.
A familiar pattern follows. Her mother-in-law drives over and takes her son’s belongings, including a Nissan the woman said she uses.
Upon returning home after running an errand — and while still in the driver’s seat — she felt something bump the Nissan. Another vehicle had come up behind her.
She looked out the passenger window and saw a teen boy holding what she thought was a gun, she told deputies. She quickly drove through a side gate.
Her mother-in-law approached. The woman said she tried keeping the doors locked, but her mother-in-law had a key and unlocked the doors each time she locked them until the mother-in-law got a door open.
The woman said she scrambled to the back seat to escape, but saw the other defendants had surrounded the vehicle.
She opened a door, and one of the defendants shut it on her finger — pinning her there — until she was grabbed by the hair and thrown to the ground, the woman said. She was kicked in the face and nearly lost consciousness, she said, and at one point was choked.
The assault lasted until deputies arrived, the woman said. She told investigators she was previously assaulted by her mother-in-law while pregnant with another child.
