Peter Seidler's widow takes legal action in fight for control over the Padres

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The widow of late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler filed a legal complaint Monday against two of his brothers in a fight over who should control the Major League Baseball team.
Sheel Seidler posted a statement addressed to Padres fans Monday on X, formerly Twitter, saying the complaint against Matthew and Robert Seidler alleges "breaches of fiduciary duty and fraud."
Sheel filed the complaint in a Travis County, Texas probate court. It included allegations that Robert ("Bob") and Matthew ("Matt"), who were named as stewards to execute their late brother's estate, had "misappropriated and misused" the assets left behind after his death in November 2023 for their own objectives.

The complaint stated that the brothers are "trying to erase Peter's vision and legacy, as well as falsely cast themselves as Peter's true heirs." She said Peter had expressed the Seidler Trusts and their assets were to "exist for Sheel's sole benefit during her lifetime."
After Sheel confronted the brothers and questioned their actions, they "responded by demeaning and attempting to intimidate her," including paying lawyers to threaten her, she alleged in the complaint.
Among the issues at hand for Sheel, according to the complaint -- who would take up the mantle of Padres "Control Person" following Peter's death. She said Peter had indicated his wish was for her, and later their children, to succeed him.
Peter's oldest sibling, John Seidler, was named the next owner of the Padres in December. He took over the organization after a playoff season where the team advanced to the National League Division Series (NLDS) and were ultimately defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers. John had been a minority owner of the Padres since 2012.
The brothers were not the only individuals mentioned in the complaint. According to the document, Bob's wife, Alecia Seidler, allegedly engaged in "racist, profane, and hateful communications directed at Sheel" in conversations about how the trust would be executed.

"This was not a decision I made lightly. During this difficult period, I have done everything in my power to avoid unwanted distractions and resolve the matter privately," Sheel said in her statement on social media, in part. "I made this decision as a very last resort, but I am confident it is the right one, and the best way to protect the Padres franchise and ensure the vision that Peter and I shared for the team will continue."
She continued, "I do not wish to litigate this matter in public, but rest assured I will do what it takes to protect my children, Peter's legacy, and this remarkable ball club. I look forward to a quick resolution so that we can -- together -- continue the work ahead."
In response to a request for comment by FOX 5/KUSI regarding the lawsuit filed by Sheel, the Padres stated, "We do not comment on pending legal matters."
