Suspected UHaul thief drives truck into canal evading authorities: CHP

(KRON) – A suspected U-Haul thief was arrested after attempting to evade police in the truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At 2:50 p.m. on Dec. 3, CHP patrol officers noticed a U-Haul box truck traveling eastbound on E. 12th Street at Derby Avenue. According to CHP, a Flock safety camera identified the U-Haul’s license plate as a stolen vehicle.
The CHP officer attempted to pull the U-Haul over. A vehicle pursuit ensued after the driver did not comply, said CHP. The suspect drove through East Oakland to northbound Interstate 880.
The U-Haul veered off the highway into a canal near High Street after the rear tire deflated, according to CHP.

CHP said the driver then fled on foot but was ultimately apprehended.
The suspect, according to CHP, was found to have an outstanding felony warrant for felon in possession of a firearm, hit and run causing injury, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The suspect was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail on charges related to vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading, evading the wrong way, hit and run causing property damage, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest, according to CHP.
