SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A man who is charged with carrying out San Francisco's first homicide of 2025 will appear in court on Monday to face murder charges.
Jose Gonzalo Rivera Flores, 29, is accused of shooting a victim at a gas station in the Mission District.
"I would like to send my condolences to the victim's friends and family, and everyone impacted by this brazen New Year’s Day killing," said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. "I would also like to thank the San Francisco Police Department for making an immediate arrest in this case."
The killing happened at 12:25 a.m. on January 1, police said. San Francisco Police Department officers found the victim on the ground and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at the gas station on South Van Ness Ave. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The shooter fled from the scene in an SUV, police said. Officers quickly found the SUV on Bayshore Boulevard and arrested Flores.
A witness told Mission Local that Flores initially became agitated because he had paid for gas but the pump was not working. When Flores talked badly to a female employee, the victim intervened, saying he should not talk that way to a woman, Mission Local reported. Flores allegedly opened fire on the victim just outside the gas station's store.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon in the Hall of Justice. Prosecutors said they will ask a judge to deny bail.
