(KRON) -- A Tesla driver who according to police, randomly threatened a man with a knife and pepper sprayed him before vandalizing his vehicle was arrested Sunday morning, according to San Mateo police. The San Mateo Police Department said it received an initial call at 3:56 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2 reporting knife brandishing accompanied by pepper spraying.
Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of S. Ellsworth Avenue and met the victim who showed "obvious signs of being pepper sprayed," police said. As the effects of the chemical subsided, the victim told police he had been sitting in his vehicle when a Tesla pulled up beside him.
The Tesla driver made a "shooting" gesture toward the victim, police said. He then parked in front of the victim's vehicle, got out, walked toward the victim and brandished a folding knife, threatening to stab the victim.

The suspect then approached the passenger side of the victim's vehicle where he kicked the rear panel, causing around $2,000 in damage, police said. He then pepper sprayed the victim through an open front window as the victim attempted to drive off while calling police.
The victim captured part of the attack on cell phone and a witness provided a photo and license plate number for the suspect and suspect vehicle. Police were able to identify the Tesla as a rental car and the driver as Alexander Williams.
Police decided to detain Williams when he returned the rental car, which was due on Friday. However, after surveilling the car rental business for several hours, Williams did not appear.
The San Mateo Police Department was tipped off that the Tesla was in San Mateo by automated license plate readers shortly after midnight on Sunday, Jan. 5. A San Mateo PD sergeant found the vehicle headed north on Highway 101.
Police conducted a traffic stop on the Tesla in the area of San Bruno Avenue in San Bruno. The driver, who police said was confirmed as Williams, was arrested. A search revealed two bottles of pepper spray and a folding knife on his person.
Williams, a 34-year-old San Jose resident, was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on charges that included:
Criminal threats
Vandalism
Brandishing
Battery
The motive for the attack, according to police, remains unknown as the suspect and victim did not know each other.
