CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Consistent below-freezing temperatures could cause car problems throughout the week. The coldest month of the year lends itself to unfavorable conditions for your car, but preventive measures can help you stay on the road The first full week of January may see temperatures well below freezing, especially during the overnight. While warming up your car is essential for comfort and proper operating conditions, other components suffer during the chilly weather. Mike LaPite with City Tire in Springfield highlights one part of your car that depletes during below-freezing conditions. "The cold weather plays havoc on batteries. You want to make sure that you have a really good battery, and that it's charged. Cold weather will kill a battery and cause a car not to start immediately." Car batteries can lose as much as 30% of their power when temperatures drop below thirty-two degrees according to AAA. Along with your battery, tires can also be negatively impacted by the cold, losing more air pressure the colder it gets. Tire pressure drops as air cools and condenses during the winter. Proper tire pressure is essential for handling cold and snowy weather. Mark Schieldrop from AAA Northeast told 22News how you can keep your tires in good condition. "It's a good idea when we shift from warmer weather to cold weather to just check your tire pressure," Schieldrop says. "Make sure that your tire pressure is at the correct level and you can check that by looking at the sticker on your door." Tires will heat up once you start driving, usually raising the pressure by a couple of PSI. If your car is older, frozen fuel lines can also occur in frigid weather, so make sure to always keep your fuel levels well above empty.
