SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission released a public notice for customers. This is after the commission released new test results from last month. Those test results show their system exceeds the standard or maximum contaminant level for drinking water. The water remains safe to drink, but they are reminding people of the risks. U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy resigns "They can continue to drink and use the water as they normally do. Specifically haloacetic acids or HAA5, regarding this matter we've been issuing notices like these since 2019. The risk associated with HAA5 is drinking it at elevated levels for decades or a lifetime" said Jaimye Bartak, Communications Manager of Springfield Water and Sewer Commission. The commission says this is not a health hazard. However, people are being asked to be aware. An alternative to tap water would be consuming or using bottled water. "The first thing that comes to mind is bottled water. There unfortunately is no certified filter that removes HAA5. The health effects associated with disinfection byproducts are based on decades of a lifetime of exposure at elevated levels" Bartak said. According to the commission, the solution is building a new water treatment plant, which is already in the works. Construction began back in the fall and the New West Water Treatment Plant is expected to be completed by 2028. "Our plant was last modernized in the 1970s and this was before disinfection byproducts were even discovered. We are asking people to expect that they will continue to see these notices until the new plant is online." Bartak said. The commission says this would help modernize Springfield's water system. Those who have specific health concerns regarding the public notice should contact their doctor. More information regarding the water quality concerns can be found here.
