Offered as a concentration within Westfield State’s Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program or as a standalone post-baccalaureate certificate, the program aims to prepare graduates to tackle critical public safety and mental health challenges.
“This groundbreaking program builds on Westfield State University’s strong legacy in Criminal Justice and Psychology education,” said Dr. Nora Padykula, Interim Dean of the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education. “By being the first in the nation to offer this within a degree, we are not only addressing critical community needs but also demonstrating our leadership in innovative, interdisciplinary education that bridges the gap between mental health and public safety.”
The program addresses essential topics such as the intersection of mental health disorders and criminal behavior, legal frameworks, and strategies for conducting on-the-spot mental health and risk assessments. This includes building knowledge about mental health disorders, their connection to crime, and the workings of the criminal justice system.
Students will also participate in research projects and a capstone experience designed to apply their academic training in real-world settings. These opportunities ensure graduates are well-equipped to foster trust between communities and public safety professionals while connecting individuals to critical mental health resources.
The co-response model aims to reduce the burden on emergency services, promote mental health care access, and enhance the relationship between law enforcement and communities. By integrating mental health expertise into public safety practices, the program is poised to strengthen outcomes for individuals and communities alike.
With this program, Westfield State reinforces its reputation as a leader in Criminal Justice and Psychology education. The initiative underscores the university’s dedication to innovative and practical approaches to learning that benefit both students and the broader community.
