ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One of the last few outdoor batting cages in the metro area, Batter's Edge, closed for some time after the former owners decided to sell the property. Now, after months of searching, a new generation of owners said they're ready to keep a pillar of the South Valley baseball community open into the future.

"Not many batting cages left, especially outdoor ones," said Leo Martinez, new owner of Batter's Edge.
The Batter's Edge has been a fixture of the Albuquerque baseball community for decades, and after listing the property for sale last April, the business is now owned by the Martinez family, Leo and Paola, who finalized the purchase this weekend. "We came down here, batting in the cages," Martinez said. "My family did, and everybody, I know a lot of people from the south valley did, so it kind of hit home when we saw it for sale."
The Martinez family said they plan on keeping the batting cage as it is but adding onto it. Right now, they're not sure what those additions could look like, but they already have some big ideas. "Maybe some more games, and do something with the building here, maybe we'll get the communities input, kind of see what they want to do," Martinez explained.
The batting cages were built during the 1970s, and the business grew to be a hub for family events, parties, or practices. The Martinezs said they want to keep that spirit of the business alive. "1976 is when it was established and stuff like this is fading away in the city," Martinez added.
Batter's Edge is expected to reopen for business in the next two weeks.
