RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Donald Trump's presidential election win was certified during a joint session of Congress on Monday. Virginia leaders have been sharing statements in response. Tim Kaine U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) praised Vice President Kamal Harris for presiding over the joint session: “My profound thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris. She is a history-making Vice President and Presidential candidate. She played an important role in an Administration that produced long lasting economic, social, and diplomatic accomplishments. She conceded when she lost. She did not lie about the result. She did not try to strong-arm election officials into fraudulently reporting fake results. She did not file baseless lawsuits challenging the outcome. She did not inspire a violent attack on the Capitol to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power—instead she presided gracefully over the election certification. She did not skip town because she was too ashamed to face people after her loss. She has never encouraged violence against political opponents. She is what democracy looks like.” Jen Kiggans U.S. Representative Jen Kiggans (VA-02) posted a video to her account on X shortly after the session ended. "Today, we certified the results of the 2024 election and it was a very interesting joint session of Congress where we had Vice President Harris presiding over the joint session," Kiggans said. "Each state was announced and then envelopes were opened that told the amount of electoral votes that each state had earned. And, after we had finished opening all 50 states, we read the totals and Donald Trump was declared the president. So, it was definitely an exciting day and the 2024 election is now official." Bobby Scott U.S. Representative Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued a statement comparing the peaceful transfer of power to Jan. 6, 2021 -- saying, in part: "Today’s orderly proceedings to certify the 2024 presidential election, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, stands in stark contrast to the violent insurrection we all witnessed four years ago," Scott's statement reads. "Many people, including President-elect Trump, have attempted to downplay, dismiss, deny and outright lie about what happened that day. Attempts to rewrite history will fail, just as they failed to overturn the election results four years ago. Today, as Members of Congress fulfilled our constitutional duty, we remember the insurrection and those who were injured and those who lost their lives, and we continue the work to protect our democracy from those who seek to undermine or end it." Rich Anderson After the joint session, Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson shared a photo of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance with the following comment in a post on X: "When I made this photo at the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, we saw in these two men a pathway to the redemption of America. On this historic day, @VA_GOP & I congratulate @realDonaldTrump & JD Vance on the certification of their landslide victory and their massive mandate." https://twitter.com/RichAndersonRPV/status/1876352548975825078
