FOXBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — Bill Belichick was, put lightly, not exactly forthright with the press during his 24-year tenure as New England Patriots head coach. Monday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft looked to convey something Belichick was always stingy with: accountability. “This whole situation is on me,” said Kraft at a Monday Foxboro press conference addressing the firing of first-year head coach and Belichick successor Jerod Mayo. “I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation.” The Patriots finished their first and only season under Mayo with a 4-13 record, missing the playoffs yet again in the post-Tom Brady era. “I guess the main thing for me is I thought we regressed,” said Kraft. “Mid-season, I think we started to regress.” Kraft also addressed the growing fan frustration with a team that used to be an automatic for a postseason berth. “I’m the biggest fan, so I understand,” said Kraft. “I don’t like losing. I don’t like losing the way we lost.” Asked who will be calling the shots in the team front office, Kraft said “We are looking for people to be working together.” “They will be staying on,” said Kraft about senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. Asked about possible future personnel, specifically former Patriots linebacker and Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, Kraft declined to comment and said that he’ll wait until interviews are conducted. As mentioned, Mayo was a rookie coach succeeding a legend, so should he have been given more time to find his stride? “Things were not developing the way we would have liked,” said Kraft. “It was time to move on.”   Categories: News, Sports
