Man accused of driving off with police cruiser outside RI Hospital

LEDYARD, Conn. (WPRI) — A Pawtucket man accused of stealing a Providence police cruiser and taking it on a joyride down I-95 South over the weekend is slated to face a judge in Connecticut on Tuesday.
Jared Remson, 27, has been charged with first-degree larceny, reckless driving, engaging police in a pursuit, failing to drive in a proper lane, and interfering with an officer.
Remson allegedly stole the cruiser, which was parked outside Rhode Island Hospital, early Saturday morning, according to police.
The officer was inside the hospital when the theft occurred, police said. It's unclear whether the cruiser was unlocked or left running when Remson got into the driver's seat, but police confirmed he was not being detained at the time.
"The circumstances surrounding this incident are being thoroughly reviewed, and the nature of the disciplinary action is still being determined," the Providence Police Department said in a statement to 12 News.
Connecticut State Police troopers spotted the cruiser crossing the state line on I-95 South approximately an hour after it was reported stolen.
Troopers chased the cruiser off the highway and into Groton, where Remson turned onto Route 117. The chase down Route 117 surpassed 100 mph at times, according to police.
Police said Ledyard officers successfully deployed stop sticks near where Route 117 intersects with Route 2A. Remson was arrested after the cruiser slowed to a stop on Route 2A near Hope Fuller Road.
Remson will remain in custody until his arraignment Tuesday after failing to post his $50,000 cash bond.
This is not the first time Remson has had a brush with the law. Court records indicate that he was arrested last year after he got into an argument with his mother and vandalized her vehicle. He then broke a light fixture at the Pawtucket Police Department.
A Rhode Island judge revoked his bail in that case just hours after the high-speed chase ended.
More recently, Remson was taken into custody in Barrington on active warrants after yelling at voters at the polls on Election Day.
