BOSTON (WPRI) — Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is ordering a review of all state-run shelters and their intake process after U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Revere police said they arrested an illegal immigrant on drug and gun charges. According to police, more than a million dollars' worth of fentanyl and an AR-15 were found in 28-year-old Leonardo Andujar Sanchez's room at the Quality Inn in Revere on Dec. 27. Shortly after, Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston said officers discovered during an interview that Andujar Sanchez unlawfully entered the country sometime in the past year. ICE has put an immigration detainer on the Dominican national, who is currently being held in state custody. In response to the arrest, Healey wrote in part, "I’ve ordered an inspection of all shelter units, beginning with the Revere site, and a full review of our intake processes to determine any additional steps that we can take to prevent criminal activity in shelters." Report: Massachusetts sees 74% increase in family homelessness Massachusetts has been the only right-to-shelter state in the country, guaranteeing shelter for families and pregnant woman since the 1980s. But in 2023, the Healey administration declared a state of emergency following an increase in migrants entering the state's shelter system, many of whom were fleeing violence in Haiti. In response, many were put in hotels across the state, including in Taunton. Since then, the administration has put restrictions in place to limit the number of families that can stay. In November, the administration said the shelter system remained at roughly 7,500 families. Healey has been calling on federal leaders to pass immigration reform in order to fast-track work authorizations, a barrier she said is preventing many legal migrants from getting a job and moving out of the shelter system. In November, the Healey administration reported it had helped 6,100 shelter residents get their work authorizations, and 4,300 residents got a job as a result. Close Thanks for signing up!
