SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Jamie Nold has been named the superintendent of South Dakota's largest school district. Nold is the assistant superintendent for the Sioux Falls School District. He's been employed in various positions with the district for 30 years. Nold was named in a Monday news conference by school board president Carly Reiter. The school board is expected to approve Nold's contract at the Jan. 13 meeting. Aquatics bond vote on its way to city councilors Nold's familiarity with the school district was one big reason why he was selected, Reiter said. Reiter said school and community surveys indicated a candidate that "knows our staff and knows our history," was the overwhelming preference for superintendent. The school board hired a consultant to conduct those school and community surveys. When the results showed what was desired in a superintendent, Nold was the clear choice, Reiter said. He knows the district and he has experience with the budget, has formed good working relationships, she said. "We didn't branch out and do a national search," Reiter said. "We didn't feel that was a good use of resources." "I'm honored and humbled...," Nold said of his selection. He said he will become superintendent of a successful district with strong programs that need to be maintained. He also praised the school district's staff. Nold will also transition to superintendent amidst some challenges. Gov. Kristi Noem has proposed a 1.25% increase for education, he said. Also, Noem has proposed a system to allow public money to be used for private school tuition. In a brief interview after the news conference, Nold said his familiarity with the school district and the state will be an advantage as he advocates to maintain adequate school funding and works with lawmakers on other topics and issues. Reiter said Nold has also had the advantage of being mentored by three prior superintendents: Pam Homan, Brian Maher and Jane Stavem. Nold is replacing Stavem, who will be leaving the district effective June 30. Reiter also said during her 11 1/2 years on the school board she has had "great interaction" with Nold. Reiter said it's likely Nold will be offered a three-year contract which is a length similar to prior superintendents. Stavem is leaving the district after serving since July 1, 2020. As of July 2023, Stavem's yearly and benefits, without including insurance, was about $329,244. A three-year contract for Stavem had been approved in July 2023. Nold said he started his education career as a teacher in the Watertown School District in South Dakota. He then moved to Washington High School in Sioux Falls. He has also been the assistant principal at Lincoln High School and the principal at Washington.
