How to ensure your home is ready for freezing temperatures
Jan 06, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Light snow has made its way to the Mid-South with small snow flurries melting as they hit the ground Monday morning.
Now is a good time to ensure homes are winterized as the Mid-South area is expected to see dangerously cold temperatures this week.
It was a busy Monday for local heating companies as storms rolled out and cold weather rolled in.
"Maybe Wednesday to Thursday we'll start seeing more," Mister Greenway Josh Medlin said. "Then next, we are expecting an influx of burst events - water heaters, all that."
Storms depart and cold arrives; Winter storm possible Friday
WREG weather experts warn that a winter storm could be brewing later this week.
Medlin said the time to prepare is now.
"The biggest thing is keeping your water moving and that can be a small drip or a small trickle," Medlin said.
WREG met with Medlin at a home in the airport area without heat.
He showed us and our viewers how wrapping your pipes could prevent a potential burst.
"You wanna cover as much as possible of everything," Medlin said.

He also offered the following tips:
Open your cabinets
Make sure windows and doors are insulated
Disconnect your garden hose
Cover your faucet
"$5 faucet covers - cover those things up because they get cold," Medlin said. "That will backtrack to the system."
Taking a few extra minutes to prepare in advance could save a lot in the long run.
If your pipes freeze, turn off the main valve, if possible, and call the Memphis Light Gas and Water emergency contact number at 528-4465.
