ARDOT prepares roads ahead of possible winter storm

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- As temperatures continue to drop, drivers across the Mid-South are bracing for the arctic blast.
Snow flurries, freezing temperatures, and strong winds are not the ideal conditions for Midsouth roadways.
On Monday morning, an 18-wheeler overturned on I-40 in Arkansas, leaving lanes closed during the morning rush.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation says they are working to keep roadways safe this week and prepared for what's ahead. They are starting out this year with 75,000 cubic yards of salt and 600 trucks. Starting Monday you will see those trucks spread out across the state.
"Yeah, I mean, the bridges are always a big concern," said Dave Parker with ARDOT. "We'll start getting together on Tuesday, and Wednesday, getting trucks ready, salt loaded into the trucks, and communicate with the crews."
Storms depart and cold arrives; Winter storm possible Friday
Parker says they are starting early as many will be braced for a big freeze and according to WREG weather experts, a possible winter storm on Friday.
"It's going to be really cold. So I think what we're going to use this week, you'll see us on Wednesday into Thursday putting down what we call the super brine, which is that combination of salt brine and beet juice," said Parker.
Parker says "super brine" is super important so snow or ice doesn't bond to the roadway as quickly. If you spot crews out, Parker has one ask.
"Please allow a little more distance for us, for your own safety. For our safety to get you know, to get that salt out on the roadway. So a good 200 feet back from those trucks to allow more braking distance is a big request of ours," he said.
