The snow has ended, and the warnings have been lifted but temperatures are taking center stage this week
LARGEST SNOWSTORM IN YEARS
Most of us are digging out from the largest snowstorm to hit the state since February of 2021. The 2-day total officially for the city of Indianapolis was 8.0" - largest since February 14-15th, 2021 when 8.1" of snow was deposited. This storm deposited double digit totals that included 13" North Vernon (Jennings Co.), 12" Westport (Decatur Co.), and 11" Brownsburg (Hendricks Co). Within the city limits of Indianapolis, Eagle Creek Park measured 10.0" with another 10" report in Lawrence.
The large, impactful snowstorm spanned a half-dozen states and responsible for a snow cover of 42% across the Nation. Largest percent for this date in eight years - 2017.
This snow isn't going anywhere anytime soon. An extended pattern of COLD is expected with occasional reinforcing surges of arctic air. We've been below freezing since January 3rd and we may not reach the freezing mark until after the midway point of the month!
While quiet midweek, the air will get colder as the first arctic blast in the series arrives. Northwest winds freshen up behind the passing cold front Wednesday and by early Thursday morning area temperatures will fall below zero in many locations.
Snow finds the cold and the colder pattern yields potential new snowfall late week. We are eying a late week system that could bring another round of accumulating snow. At this time, it is not as strong as the one that just departed. We will follow this system rest of the week.
